Gas Ball Valves
Gas ball valves are industrial valves that can be used as stop valves, control valves or diverter valves both in household use and in different branches of industry. The main parts of gas ball valves are 1) a body and 2) a ball-shaped disk. There is a through hole in the disk that may be of a variety of shapes and sizes depending on the required flow capacity.
Stop ball valves are the most widespread. They are successfully used in pipelines carrying natural gas and other working media.
Ball valve bodies are made by means of welding, forging and casting of brass, bronze, cast iron, different grades of steel or titanium. Gas ball valve disks are mostly made of stainless steel. When the valve is made, it is subjected to strength, operational and trim leak tests. Gas valves are air-tested to achieve A-class leak tightness. The most common types of end connection to the pipeline are welded (typical for steel ball valves), union, screwed or flanged joint. However, there are also some ball valves with compression, composite end connection and wafer type valves.
According to hermetic sealing techniques, ball valves are divided into two groups: trunnion mounted and floating ball valves (typical for valves of a small inside diameter). As for floating ball valves, the required leak tightness is achieved through a snug fit of the ball to the seat ring due to system pressure (so called “self-sealing” ball valves). Depending on operating conditions, (environment, temperature and, above all, chemical composition) seat rings are made of different grades of rubber, PTFE and metal. PTFE rings are applied to ball valves meant for natural gas.
Ball valves are operated by electric, pneumatic and gas-over-oil actuators (for explosion-proof design mostly). They help to create the necessary torque and provide a high level of industrial process automation.
